Artemis, Bombardier, Ricardo collaborate on rail brake energy recovery
A collaborative research and development project on rail brake energy recovery is scheduled to commence in the second half of this year and will see Ricardo join forces with fluid power expert Artemis Intelligent Power and rail technology expert Bombardier Transportation. The system to be researched is intended for use on diesel powered multiple units. It is conceived as a cost-effective solution that could be retrofitted to existing rolling stock as well as incorporated into new rail vehicles. To demonstrate a complete rail driveline incorporating this energy storage technology, the system will be coupled to a wheel-set supplied by Bombardier ...
Government infographic on manufacturing: An engine of job growth
Jenni LeCompte, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Public Affairs, posted a blog (see bottom of this page) on the Treasury department's site describing how manufacturing is an engine of job growth and re-shoring is increasing. Nice to hear this being touted by the government, and love their infographic, which is below. From the blog: During today’s trip to Albany, New York, President Obama highlighted an important and emerging trend – rather than outsourcing, companies are increasingly choosing to invest and create jobs in the United States. While companies across industries are bringing jobs back, this trend is particularly important in manufacturing. ...
Hydraulic cylinders aid in flood control along Japanese river
Eaton hydraulic cylinders are hard at work in one of Japan’s largest flood-control projects on the Shinano River that flows from Nagano to Niigata in Northern Japan. IHI Corp. of Japan, the country’s leading manufacturer of gates for rivers and dams, contracted Eaton to support the project by supplying 12 large-bore XL Series cylinders and eight mid-size cylinders. The custom cylinders open and close large barrage gates, which control and regulate water levels, prevent flooding and support critical irrigation infrastructure for agriculture. Requiring three years to complete, the high-profile barrage project was officially commissioned by the Japanese government in August 2011. In the ...
Cartridge valves allow pilot control of clutches, brakes, DCVs
Easley, S.C.—Comatrol has introduced the 09 Series Cartridge Valves for proportional and on/off pilot control of clutches, brakes and directional control valves. The series includes two on/off solenoid valves and a proportional pressure reducing valve. The valves are especially designed for pilot applications requiring minimal pressure losses in the system. The 09 Series is a hybrid product that combines a 10 size cavity with an 08 size tube/coil, thus optimizing performance for pilot control applications. The large 10 size cavity provides high flow capability with low pressure drop, while the 08 size tube/coil provides a smaller package size and lower power ...

How did you get into engineering or fluid power specifically? My father was in the engineering industry of railroad maintenance. In late 1950s, the technology to maintain the railway tracks was not that sophisticated. Tracks were aligned mostly manually and on a continual basis. That was the first time, when I learnt the theory of co-efficient of linear... Continue Reading HERE
