Milwaukee—Four new technical documents have recently been published and are now available from the National Fluid Power Association (NFPA).
ISO 16589-1:2011 (supersedes ISO 16589-1:2001): Rotary shaft lip-type seals incorporating thermoplastic sealing elements — Part 1: Nominal dimensions and tolerances (second edition)
Scope: ISO 16589 specifies seals utilizing sealing elements manufactured from suitably formulated compounds based on thermoplastic materials, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). They are considered suitable for use under low pressure conditions.
This part of ISO 16589 shows seal types and examples. It also specifies the nominal dimensions and tolerance of the seals, shafts and housings, as well as a dimensional identification code.
Benefits: ISO 16589-1 benefits manufacturers of rotary shaft lip type seals incorporating thermoplastic sealing elements by establishing dimensions for these seals. The standard benefits manufacturers of components in which these seals are used (e.g. pumps and motors) by specifying the dimensional limits of shafts and housings. Proper use of seals in housings that both conform to ISO 16589-1 should result in excellent sealing performance.

ISO 16589-3:2011 (supersedes ISO 16589-3:2001): Rotary shaft lip-type seals incorporating thermoplastic sealing elements — Part 3: Storage, handling and installation (second edition)
Scope: ISO 16589 specifies seals utilizing sealing elements manufactured from suitably formulated compounds based on thermoplastic materials, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). They are considered suitable for use under low pressure conditions.
This part of ISO 16589 gives users of lip-type seals guidance on the careful storage and handling and proper installation of rotary shaft lip-type seals; attention is drawn to the hazards involved and ways of avoiding them are pointed out.
Benefits: ISO 16589-3 can help improve seal performance by providing guidance on the correct storage, handling and proper installation of rotary shaft lip type seals incorporating thermoplastic sealing elements.

ISO 16589-4:2011 (supersedes ISO 16589-4:2001): Rotary shaft lip-type seals incorporating thermoplastic sealing elements — Part 4: Performance test procedures (second edition)
Scope: ISO 16589 specifies seals utilizing sealing elements manufactured from suitably formulated compounds based on thermoplastic materials, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). They are considered suitable for use under low pressure conditions.
This part of ISO 16589 specifies general performance tests which can be used for seal qualification purposes. Materials quality control, dynamic testing, and supplementary low temperature testing requirements are covered.
Benefits: ISO 16589-4 can help improve seal performance by providing a standardized test method that manufacturers and users of rotary shaft lip type seals incorporating thermoplastic sealing elements can use for qualification purposes.

NFPA member price: $86.00
ISO 16589-5:2011 (supersedes ISO 16589-5:2001): Rotary shaft lip-type seals incorporating thermoplastic sealing elements — Part 5: Identification of visual imperfections (second edition)
Scope: ISO 16589 specifies seals utilizing sealing elements manufactured from suitably formulated compounds based on thermoplastic materials, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). They are considered suitable for use under low pressure conditions.
This part of ISO 16589 defines and classifies typical surface imperfections that could impair the function of the seals, and is intended as a convenience for purchasers and manufacturers in their discussions concerning the importance of these imperfections in different applications.
Benefits: ISO 16589-5 can help improve the performance of rotary shaft lip type seals incorporating thermoplastic sealing elements by providing a common language for manufacturers and users to use in their discussions about the effect of imperfections in different applications and helping to ensure that the correct seal is used.
