The latest data published by the National Fluid Power Association shows industry shipments of fluid power products for March 2014 increased 6.5% compared to March 2013, and increased 11.8% compared to last month. Mobile hydraulic, industrial hydraulic and pneumatic shipments increased in March 2014 when compared to March 2013. Mobile hydraulic, industrial hydraulic and pneumatic shipments increased when compared to last month. These charts are drawn from data collected from more than 80 manufacturers of fluid power products by NFPA’s Confidential Shipment Statistics (CSS) program. Much more information is available to NFPA members, which allows them to better understand trends and anticipate change in their market and the customer markets they serve.

NFPA Stat 2
Figure 2. Hydraulic and Pneumatic Shipments

Each point on the graph in figure 1 represents the most recent 12 months of orders compared to the previous 12 months of orders. Each point can be read as a percentage. For example, 95.6 (the February 2014 level of the industrial hydraulic series) indicates that industrial hydraulic orders received from March 2013 to February 2014 were 95.6% of the orders received from March 2012 to February 2013.

The graph of 12-month moving averages in figure 2 shows that in March 2014, both pneumatic and hydraulic shipments increased.

NFPA Stat 3
Figure 3. Shipments – Cumulative year-to-date % change (2014 vs. 2013)

The table in figure 3 is expressed in terms of cumulative percent changes. These changes refer to the percent difference between the relevant cumulative total for 2014 and the total for the same months in 2013. For example, the February pneumatic shipments figure of 3.6 means that for the calendar year through February 2014, pneumatic shipments increased 3.6% compared to the same time period in 2013.
