A Segway-like concept for material haulage

April 24, 2025 By Ken Korane

In addition to the thousands of new and proven machines on display at this year’s bauma 2025 exhibition in Munich, models and prototypes for next-generation equipment were also a point of focus.

Liebherr’s autonomous S1 Vision hauler rides on only a single axle and two wheels.

For example, on display this year at Liebherr’s InnovationLab was a new concept for hauling material, the S1 Vision. The novel hauler mimics a Segway in that it has only a single axle and two wheels, and no cab or driver. The S1 Vision is designed to enhance productivity and safety and reduce greenhouse gas emissions with its battery-electric and autonomous design.

A Segway maintains balance on two wheels. It relies on technology that involves self-balancing and movement using gyroscopes, tilt sensors, and a computer-controlled feedback system. Balance is maintained by sensors detecting inclination and adjusting the drive motors to keep the load upright. While details of the S1 Vision’s control system were not disclosed, results are similar.

According to Liebherr officials, the truck can operate effectively on a single axle. The S1 Vision features a self-levelling system that ensures maximum stability and safety, even on bumpy or rough terrain. This technology significantly reduces the risk of tipping, providing smooth and secure operation across various environments. During loading and dumping, two arms extend to the ground to aid stability.

The machine’s zero-turn radius means the truck can easily turn on the spot and travel in all directions, making it well-suited for applications in tight spaces that require precise movements and flexibility.

S1 Vision is powered by an electric drive that significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions during operation. It is also equipped with advanced sensors so the truck can navigate independently, avoid obstacles and efficiently manage traffic. Further, if multiple S1 Vision trucks are operating at one site, the system enables them to connect and share real-time information — which optimizes fleet operations, reduces congestion and enhances overall efficiency.

The truck is designed to be scalable, with a payload ranging from 220 kg to 131 tons. Because of this payload versatility, the S1 Vision can be adapted for various applications, including earthmoving, farming and agriculture, construction and mining.

A customizable design and lightweight structure of this concept makes the S1 Vision easy to transport, lowering logistics costs and which also contributes to a sustainable, cost-effective haulage solution suitable for diverse operational environments.

This vehicle design involved a collaborative effort between Liebherr Corporate Ventures AG, its business unit for innovation and technology development in Switzerland, and Liebherr Mining Equipment in Newport News, Va.
