The CCEFP has announced a $5,000,000 fluid power energy efficiency improvement research program for commercial off-highway vehicles. FY 2017 funding has been appropriated by Congress and signed by the President last week. This program is the result of three years of hard work lobbying the Department of Energy (DOE) and Congress. The effort was led by CCEFP and supported by its industry partners. This DOE program will sponsor research projects that will improve fluid power efficiency in commercial off-highway vehicles (construction, agriculture, material handling, mining, etc.). The CCEFP goal is to establish a permanent program with $10,000,000 in funding per year.
This initiative will require CCEFP’s continuous cultivation and communication with DOE. The CCEFP will immediately begin assisting the DOE in developing the details of the grant program including research areas of focus and scope, targeted matching criteria, appropriate funding levels, etc. Subsequently, the CCEFP will organize and host a DOE informational workshop in July at the University of Minnesota for industry supporters and research faculty, to educate DOE program managers on the critical research areas for improving fluid power efficiency, to generate ideas, facilitate discussion, and develop research topics and proposal teams to respond to the DOE Call for Proposals to be announced by September 2017. Once the DOE solicitation is released, the CCEFP will ambitiously promote the program to its academic and industry network, building potential teams of experts.
Proposal teams may be led by either universities or companies, but university participation is required. Winning proposals will have strong industry support and a vision that leads to commercialization. Upon request, the CCEFP will serve as a grant-writing resource or assemble an expert proposal review team. Research teams who are awarded grants will be administered by the DOE.
An invitation to participate in the July DOE informational workshop at the University of Minnesota will be shared soon. Additional details on the scope of the DOE program will released upon development.
